WAI Night - Viking Facility Tour

2010 Sep 15 19:00

This meeting night of September 15th will include a tour of the Viking Air, Ltd. Hangar where they are building the newest version of the Twin Otter aircraft.

The DHC-6 Twin Otter is a Canadian 19-passenger STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) utility aircraft originally developed by de Havilland Canada in the 1960s. De Havilland aircraft were origianlly manufactured for the harsh and difficult-to-access environs of Canada and are frequently found on skis, floats, and tundra tires. While the Twin Otters have been out of production for over 20 years, they are still in use all around the world in locations that most aircraft simply cannot manage. Viking Air Ltd. is bringing them back into production at their Calgary manufacturing location and they have invited us for a tour of their plant to see history restored.

The tour will start around 7:30 pm on the 15th, which (hopefully) will give everyone time to show up at our usual time and place (SAIT Art Smith Aero Centre, 7:00 pm) and we can make whatever announcements need to be made and organize getting people down the road (literally around 4 blocks away) to the Viking hangar.
